On Tuesday, Benin City witnessed the inauguration of a new era in Edo State as Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, took their oaths of office, marking the beginning of their administration. Following a decisive victory in the September 21, 2024, governorship election, Okpebholo officially succeeded former Governor Godwin Obaseki in a ceremony attended by political leaders, supporters, and dignitaries. Among the notable appointments to Okpebholo’s cabinet was Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, the son of former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, named as Health Commissioner-designate, highlighting a blend of seasoned experience and continuity.
The swearing-in, administered by the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, took place amidst a jubilant crowd and heightened security. Okpebholo, accompanied by his two daughters, took the oath at 1:00 p.m., followed by Idahosa, who was joined by his wife. After taking office, Okpebholo inspected a guard of honor and reviewed a parade by the Nigeria Police, symbolizing his commitment to upholding security.
In his inaugural address, Okpebholo outlined an ambitious five-point agenda, vowing to tackle security, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and food security. The new governor declared an immediate focus on ending the state’s issues with kidnapping and violent crime, promising strong actions to restore safety and security.
“Our citizens’ safety is our top priority,” Okpebholo stated, pledging a decisive approach to crime while fostering economic opportunities. He emphasized that his administration would “not betray the confidence reposed in us by the people” and aimed to boost Edo State’s economy through targeted programs.
Key initiatives included rebuilding roads to improve connectivity across the state, enhancing healthcare access, supporting small businesses with micro-loans, and empowering youths through skill acquisition programs. Additionally, he promised to recruit more teachers and improve classrooms, ensuring quality education at all levels.
In a show of unity and continuity, President Bola Tinubu sent a congratulatory message urging Okpebholo to bring prosperity and effective governance to Edo State. Represented at the ceremony by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu expressed hope that Okpebholo’s administration would restore Edo’s status as an All Progressives Congress (APC) stronghold, emphasizing the importance of strengthening democratic institutions.
Alongside the appointment of Cyril Oshiomhole, Musa Ikhilor was named Secretary to the State Government, and former House of Representatives member Samson Osagie was designated as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Dr. Oshiomhole, a Harvard-trained medical professional, brings a strong background in healthcare, while Ikhilor’s extensive experience in legislative governance and constitutional reforms is expected to support effective governance.
This commitment to capable leadership extended to the newly inaugurated Edo State Youth Parliament, which expressed confidence in Okpebholo’s vision. The Youth Parliament urged the governor to prioritize youth representation within the government and promised to collaborate in promoting economic empowerment and inclusivity for Edo’s younger generation.
With former Governor Obaseki’s departure, his aides dismissed rumors of his leaving the country, stating that he remains committed to Edo’s future. Reflecting on his tenure, Obaseki affirmed his dedication to supporting the state’s development.
Okpebholo’s administration began with a directive to establish a panel investigating past failures to inaugurate certain House of Assembly members in 2019, demonstrating a focus on transparency and accountability.
With these early actions and appointments, Okpebholo’s administration has set an inclusive and ambitious course, seeking to build upon Edo State’s legacy while addressing the challenges and aspirations of its citizens.
