In a thrilling turn of events, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, two games ahead of schedule. This achievement comes courtesy of Libya’s unexpected 1-0 triumph over Rwanda in Kigali on Thursday, which ensured Nigeria’s place in Africa’s premier football tournament, The PUNCH reports.

Libya’s Mediterranean Knights delivered a late-game shock to their Rwandan hosts, with Saad Mohamed’s goal in the 84th minute breathing new life into their own qualification hopes. This surprise result also secured Nigeria’s position in the 35th AFCON tournament, allowing the Super Eagles to bypass the pressure of needing a result in their next match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.

Set to compete in Morocco, the Super Eagles, who recently claimed second place in the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, have qualified for their 21st tournament appearance. Managed by Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, Nigeria endured a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the hosts in the last AFCON final, adding to their history of narrow defeats, having lost in five AFCON finals since their debut in 1963. They have taken home the coveted title three times: in 1980 on home ground, in Tunisia in 199
