Warri, Delta State – The city of Warri is on edge as thousands of Ijaw protesters take to the streets in a massive demonstration against recent comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. The protesters, expressing their anger over what they describe as “insulting and demeaning” remarks against the Ijaw ethnic nationality, are demanding Wike’s immediate removal from office.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Wike Must Go!” and “Respect the Ijaw Nation”, the demonstrators flooded major roads in Warri, causing significant traffic disruptions. Security operatives have been deployed to prevent any breakdown of law and order, as tensions continue to rise.
Leaders of the Ijaw community, speaking at the protest, condemned Wike’s statements, arguing that they undermine the contributions of the Ijaw people to national development. “We will not tolerate any form of disrespect against our people,” said one of the protest leaders. “The President must act now and relieve Wike of his position.”
There has been no official response from Wike or the Federal Government regarding the protests, but political analysts suggest that the growing unrest could escalate if the government fails to address the grievances of the Ijaw people.
