Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday ordered the release of 209 prisoners in the state as a measure to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
Sanwo-Olu made this known during a press conference at the State House, Marina, Lagos.
The Governor said he had ordered the release of the prisoners in various correctional centres across the state, according to the powers vested in him by the constitution.
“Some of the prisoners released were those who were above 60 years of age and some having six months to spend in jail.
“Others had served over 95 percent of their jail sentence while some were serving minor offences and the rest were released based on health grounds,” he said.
Lagos State has a total of 657 active cases according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
