Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, has emphasized the judiciary’s pivotal role in ensuring electoral integrity. Delivering the 9th Convocation Lecture at Gregory University Uturu (GUU) in Abia State, Ozekhome urged the judiciary to interpret and apply electoral laws impartially to uphold the rule of law and reinforce public trust in democratic institutions.
He highlighted that the judiciary serves as both a shield and a sword in the pursuit of free and fair elections, providing a platform to resolve electoral grievances and maintain public confidence in the democratic process. Ozekhome cautioned that while judicial intervention often strengthens democracy, it risks undermining its core principles if not carefully managed.
The event also saw 190 graduates receiving degrees, with 16 earning First Class honors. Former Power Minister Barth Nnaji and Prof. Evaristus Anyaehie were honored alongside Ozekhome, reflecting the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and societal development.
