The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns over a high-profile meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stating that the gathering poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The meeting, held at Obasanjo’s Abeokuta residence on Monday, was attended by prominent political figures, including former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke. While Atiku described the visit as a courtesy call, speculation is rife that discussions revolved around a potential political alliance ahead of the next presidential election.
However, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, dismissed the meeting as a gathering of “indolent and lazy” politicians, asserting that the ruling party remains focused on governance and winning the upcoming Anambra governorship election.
“We are concentrating on delivering President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and winning Anambra’s governorship election. We do not have time for political distractions,” Basiru stated.
He further downplayed any potential threat from opposition figures, noting that the APC remains a strong and united party compared to the fragmented opposition.
Atiku, who has made previous attempts to rally opposition forces, has yet to confirm any plans for a coalition. Meanwhile, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi expressed openness to alliances but emphasized that they must align with principles of transparency and good governance.
While the Labour Party has distanced itself from coalition talks, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has expressed willingness to collaborate under credible leadership.
As Nigeria’s political landscape begins to shape up for 2027, the APC remains confident in its electoral prospects, dismissing opposition meetings as inconsequential.
