Abuja, March 14, 2025 – Embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a fresh legal challenge against her suspension from the Senate, even as the upper chamber continues to rally behind Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The legal action, initiated on Friday, seeks to overturn what Akpoti-Uduaghan describes as an “unjust and politically motivated” suspension. Her lawyers argue that the decision violates constitutional provisions on fair hearing and legislative due process.
“The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is a clear abuse of legislative power and a breach of her fundamental rights. We are confident that the judiciary will intervene to correct this injustice,” a member of her legal team stated.
Meanwhile, the Senate leadership, under Akpabio, has defended the suspension, insisting that it followed established parliamentary rules. Senate spokespersons have also dismissed allegations of bias, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions necessitated disciplinary measures.
The development has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters of the Kogi Central senator condemning the suspension as an attempt to silence opposition voices, while others argue that legislative discipline must be upheld.
Observers say the court’s ruling on the matter could set a precedent for legislative suspensions and parliamentary discipline in Nigeria’s democracy. The case is expected to be heard in the coming weeks.
