Opposition Demands Probe of Impeached Lagos Speaker, GAC Meets Assembly Leaders
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State have called for an investigation into the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa. The parties urged anti-graft agencies to probe allegations of corruption leveled against him.
Speaking on the matter, Hakeem Amode, Lagos PDP Publicity Secretary, stated that the Lagos Assembly should submit a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Amode emphasized the need for transparency, suggesting the EFCC investigate and establish whether Obasa engaged in false enrichment or other fraudulent activities. Similarly, Sam Okpala, LP Secretary, called for legal action against Obasa if the allegations hold weight, stressing that justice should not involve witch-hunting or persecution.
Obasa’s impeachment followed accusations of disrespecting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the 2024 budget presentation. Prominent PDP chieftain, Chief Bode George, described Obasa’s actions as dishonorable, citing it as a direct insult to the governor.
Silence From Obasa and His Loyalists
Since his impeachment, Obasa and his loyalists have refrained from public commentary. Reports indicate that Obasa, currently abroad, was removed in his absence by 90% of the Assembly members, with Mojisola Meranda sworn in as the new Speaker. Sources in his constituency, Agege, reveal a divided political camp, with some supporting Obasa and others opposing his prolonged tenure.
While his supporters staged protests at the Assembly complex, they were arrested but later released. Residents in Agege expressed mixed feelings, acknowledging Obasa’s contributions but largely moving on from his removal.
GAC Meeting With New Speaker
Newly sworn-in Speaker Mojisola Meranda met with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) at Lagos House, Marina, seeking their endorsement. The meeting, described as strategic, focused on briefing the council about recent developments in the Assembly. Following the meeting, Meranda affirmed that the GAC granted its blessings to her leadership.
The situation continues to unfold under heavy security at the Lagos Assembly complex.
