The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, has deployed four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor speeding and manage traffic flows across the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced this during a press briefing on Thursday, stating that the new installations would enhance the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and other Traffic Management Solution devices.
“The checkpoint sites are designed to detect overspeeding. One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while another is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h. These locations are strategically chosen to curb overspeeding, a major cause of road accidents,” Osiyemi said.
Additionally, two e-police sites have been installed at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to monitor traffic violations such as running red lights, non-compliance with lane discipline, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways.
Osiyemi urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations, stating that offenders will be fined N20,000 for running a red light and N50,000 for speeding violations.
“Enforcement will commence immediately. Violators will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service detailing their infractions and the corresponding fines. This system is not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving, reduce accidents, and ensure an orderly transport system,” he added.
The briefing was attended by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, representatives from Huawei Technologies, and key ministry directors.
