First Lady of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed confidence in the Nigerian Senate, describing it as a “matured institution” that deserves respect.
Speaking with journalists at the State House, Abuja, she dismissed concerns about the Senate’s handling of internal matters, stating that lawmakers are “doing what is needful.” Her remarks come amid allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of power leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
As Nigeria prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, the First Lady emphasized the importance of female leadership, urging women to assert themselves in positions of power.
“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I am not taking a position. I believe the Senate is doing what is needful. It is a matured chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It is an honor to be part of that institution,” she said.
Reflecting on her 12 years of service in the Senate, Senator Tinubu stressed the need for women to command respect in leadership.
“Women, raise yourselves. Don’t be in a position where men will talk to you anyhow,” she advised.
Celebrating the achievements of women globally and in Nigeria, she acknowledged the progress made over the years, highlighting figures like Zuriel Oduwole, known for her advocacy in peacebuilding.
