Sokoto, March 1st, 2025 – A massive fire broke out on Saturday at the popular Kara Market in Sokoto State, causing extensive damage to businesses and properties. The market, renowned for its trade in grains and other essential commodities, was engulfed in flames, triggering panic among traders and residents.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started in the late hours of the evening, rapidly spreading due to the highly flammable goods stored in various stalls. Firefighters and local volunteers struggled to contain the inferno, as strong winds and the congested layout of the market made their efforts challenging.
As of the time of this report, occupants of nearby shops and houses were hastily relocating their belongings, fearing the fire’s potential spread.
Although the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, initial reports suggest that goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed. Many traders, whose livelihoods depend on the market, have been left in distress.
Efforts to reach the market’s general manager for comments were unsuccessful, as he was preoccupied with preventing looting and ensuring public safety amid the chaos.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, with speculations ranging from an electrical fault to possible human error. The Sokoto State government has assured affected traders of support, pledging to provide relief measures to help them recover from their losses.
More updates will follow as investigations continue.
