Segun Olayinka, the son of a cocoa farmer from Ile-Ife, Osun State, has achieved an extraordinary academic milestone by graduating with a 4.79 CGPA in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). His result is the second-highest CGPA recorded in the Faculty of Law since its establishment in 1962.
In an exclusive interview, Olayinka shared insights into his humble beginnings, academic journey, and the relentless drive that fueled his success.
Humble Beginnings and Academic Inspiration
Olayinka, who completed his studies in June 2024, revealed that his decision to study Law was inspired by a desire to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged, especially those unable to access justice due to financial constraints.
Growing up in Abiri, a small village in Ile-Ife, he witnessed the struggles faced by his parents—a cocoa farmer and a small-scale trader—and resolved to chart a different path through education. Inspired by legal icons like Gani Fawehinmi, Olayinka nurtured his passion for advocacy and excelled as a debater during his secondary school years.
“I believed not every child of a peasant farmer should end up as one,” he said. “I set professional goals for myself, and my background motivated me to succeed.”
Overcoming Challenges and Staying Focused
Despite his academic brilliance, Olayinka faced significant challenges, including financial constraints and his mother’s health struggles.
In his third year, Olayinka’s mother developed complications from diabetes, and he was forced to combine academics with odd jobs to cover living expenses and medical bills.
“There were times I thought of dropping out,” he admitted. “But with God’s help and perseverance, I pressed on and excelled.”
He recounted trekking long distances to reduce transportation costs and enduring late-night study sessions to prepare for exams. Despite these obstacles, Olayinka achieved a perfect ‘A’ record in his third-year Law courses, a feat that boosted his confidence and renewed his determination.
Study Habits and Strategies for Success
Olayinka attributed his academic success to consistency, early preparation, and effective time management.
“I started preparing for exams right from the beginning of the semester, so I was always ahead,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of balancing academics with practical learning experiences, including internships and professional training, to develop both theoretical and practical legal skills.
Academic Achievements and Awards
Olayinka’s hard work paid off when he was recognized as the overall best-graduating student in his faculty.
He received 12 prizes during the convocation ceremony—11 for academic excellence and one for securing the highest number of awards.
Reflecting on his achievement, he said, “It gives me joy and fulfillment. It motivates me to do more and inspires others from similar backgrounds to believe in themselves and pursue excellence.”
Future Aspirations and Advice for Aspiring Lawyers
Looking ahead, Olayinka hopes to pursue postgraduate studies through scholarships and gain professional training in reputable law firms.
He advised aspiring lawyers to stay focused, embrace challenges, and prepare thoroughly for their studies.
“Studying Law is demanding,” he said. “You need to memorize cases and principles, but you also need to understand their practical application. Build professional skills through internships and engage in legal discussions to deepen your knowledge.”
Gratitude and Support System
Olayinka expressed gratitude to God, his family, and mentors, including Mr. Michael Koyejo, a lecturer who supported him academically and provided valuable resources.
He also thanked his colleagues, senior law students, and friends who encouraged him throughout his journey.
Key Lessons and Inspiration
Olayinka highlighted faith and perseverance as the greatest lessons he learned during his academic journey.
“No matter the storms, God has assured us of victory,” he said. “I faced challenges but never gave up because I believed in the assurance of success.”
His achievement stands as a testament to resilience, hard work, and faith, inspiring students to rise above obstacles and pursue their dreams with determination.
