Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, made the call in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, expressing concern over the gravity of the allegations and their implications for Nigeria’s leadership.
“Like millions of Nigerians, I watched with deep concern as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised serious allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” he stated.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure the matter is not ignored, stressing that the integrity of the Senate must remain intact.
“The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it—especially its leadership—must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect, both for their office and the citizens they serve. As the third-most-powerful figure in the country, the Senate President should embody unimpeachable character,” he emphasized.
Atiku also underscored the need for a political environment where female legislators are respected and not subjected to intimidation. He lamented the underrepresentation of women in the Senate, highlighting that the four women currently serving must be empowered, not silenced.
“With only four female senators, we must create an environment where they can contribute meaningfully without fear of harassment or intimidation,” he said.
Further addressing the broader implications, Atiku described sexual harassment as a major obstacle to women’s professional advancement, calling for serious action against such misconduct regardless of the individuals involved.
“Sexual harassment in the workplace remains a significant barrier to women’s progress and, by extension, the nation’s development. Allegations of such misconduct should never be dismissed, particularly when they involve a public official with immense power and responsibility,” he added.
He emphasized that the response to these allegations would shape Nigeria’s global image regarding justice, accountability, and gender inclusion in governance.
“The handling of this matter will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance,” Atiku stressed.
Finally, he urged the President and the Senate to ensure a credible and independent investigation into the claims to uphold the integrity of the nation’s leadership.
