Ibadan, Oyo State — In a firm commitment to uphold the integrity of the ongoing Alaafin of Oyo selection process, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to take decisive action, including prosecution, against any kingmaker found guilty of accepting bribes or engaging in corrupt practices.

The Alaafin stool, regarded as one of the most prestigious traditional thrones in Yorubaland, has remained vacant since the passing of Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III in April 2022. The selection process has drawn significant attention, with multiple influential families and candidates seeking the revered position.

During a press briefing on Friday, Governor Makinde addressed allegations of bribery within the Oyo Mesi, the traditional council tasked with selecting the next Alaafin. He expressed deep concern over claims of financial inducements and misconduct, stressing the need for fairness and transparency in the process.

“It has come to my attention that some individuals may be attempting to compromise the integrity of the selection process through bribery and other unethical means,” Makinde said. “Let me be clear: any kingmaker or individual found guilty of such actions will face the full weight of the law. This administration will not tolerate corruption or manipulation in this sacred process.”

The governor called on the Oyo Mesi to carry out their responsibilities with the utmost sincerity, reminding them of the historical and cultural significance of the Alaafin stool. He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities, assuring them that such reports would be thoroughly investigated.

Makinde further emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the new Alaafin emerges through a credible and impartial process, reflecting the true will of the people and preserving the dignity of the revered institution.

The governor’s firm stance has been widely praised by residents and stakeholders, many of whom expressed hopes that his intervention will deter corrupt practices and uphold the sanctity of the Alaafin selection process. Meanwhile, the state government has reiterated its readiness to provide support to the Oyo Mesi in ensuring a smooth and transparent selection.

As the race for the Alaafin stool continues, all eyes remain on the Oyo Mesi to deliver a candidate who embodies the qualities of leadership, wisdom, and cultural preservation expected of the Alaafin of Oyo.
