16 things to know about Edo Gov-Elect Okpebholo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of Saturday, September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 247,274 votes and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) who came a distant third in the race with 22,763 votes.

1. Monday Okpebholo was born in Uromi, Edo State in 1970.

2. He is 54.

3. 3. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics.

4. He has a Master’s degree in Policy and Leadership Studies in the University of Abuja.

5. Okpebholo began his political career in 2003 in the House of Representatives, focusing on rural development and agricultural reform.

6. Okpebholo contested for the Senatorial seat of Edo Central under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was elected on 25 February 2023.

7. On 13 June 2023, he was inaugurated into the 10th National Assembly as a Senator for Edo Central.

8. In February 2024, he won the Edo APC gubernatorial primary election.

9. He is a technocrat with vast experience in the private sector, especially in agriculture, oil and gas, and construction.

10. Okpebholo is a philanthropist through his foundation, providing scholarships and healthcare to underprivileged communities.

11. His campaign focused on economic reform, foreign investment, and infrastructure development to bring stability and growth to Edo.

12. His background in agricultural economics positions him to revitalize Edo’s agricultural sector.

13. Okpebholo began his political career in 2003 in the House of Representatives, focusing on rural development and agricultural reform.

14. His political and business achievements reflect his dedication to growth and development in Edo. Monday Okpebholo polled 12,433 votes, emerging as the APC candidate.

15. Okpebholo is married to Blessing Okpapi Ekpe and they have two children.

  1. 16. Besides being a politician and a family man, he is also an active member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
